Leaving a halter on a horse that is unattended in a stall, pasture or paddock is a REALLY bad and dangerous idea that can have disasterous consequences. Too many horses are injured or die from strangulation because they get the halter caught on a fence post, tree limb, etc. The most common is getting a leg caught in the halter when they use a hoof to scratch an itch. If you feel you must leave a halter on a horse, by all means, make sure you buy the "breakaway" type. If a horse gets the halter snagged on anything, it is designed to break under heavy pressure. Ask your local tack shop. If they don't have it, check around at other tack shops or have them order one for you. It's most ideal if a horse is left unhaltered when unattended. Even with a breakaway halter, they can still be injured. If they're not injured, they will have that emotional trauma of almost being strangled, which can result in some negative behaviors in your horse. *ADDED* Yes, I agree that you should not have a halter on a horse while unattended in a stall or a paddock. If you're going to be going riding, and you have the halter on, make sure you hook the cross ties to his/her halter..If you're outside, and maybe you forgot something, and maybe you're not really--or someone else, may not-- clue in to bring the horse with you--have a friend or family member watch over the horse. But I would recommend he/she holds his/her halter. Many dangerous things can occur all from the same problem - the halter - So, don't leave the halter on...Just bring the halter and lead rope with you. Now, as the person who originally answered this, yes, breakaway halters may be a suggestion to use, but yes, accidents can still happen. Now, I am not sure when you asked this question, but I was also looking for an answer to this, but after knowing it for awhile, I decided to add on to this...but it doesn't have to specifically have to help you, others who are looking for this answer will have something else to read, and will know....

It depends on the turnout halter. For a horse to be safe out in pasture with a halter on, it must have a breakaway crownpiece. These are normally leather, but I have seen some with a velcro piece. You can normally get replacement crownpieces for breakaway halters, or pieces to convert a normal halter into a breakaway.

There are special safety release halter designed for this purpose. If the horse gets caught on something and pulls, part of the halter will break and the horse will be able to pull free. Safety release halters are safe to keep on in the pasture. Any other type of halter is not. Horses can easily get caught up and, being pray animals with a strong flight instinct, panic and hurt themselves. We have left regular halters on any horse we feel is a flight risk for decades and have never had an issue. I feel it is safe and a reasonable thing to do, if you believe the horse could escape. Having said this, leaving halters on for extended periods of time can cause other health issues. You need to make sure the halter is clean and the horse does get some time with no halter on.

You can buy field 'safe' halters that have velcro or rubber instead of metal these are desined to snap should your horse get stuck on something.The fact the halter is old doesn't matter just use a newer or nylon one for leading your horse in' your horse doesn't care about appearence.

For howrse, it is false. (I would know, I just took that quiz and got 8 out of 8!) It's not good because the howrse could get hooked on something, and other horses can grab it and yank it to bully the horse. Some people do leave the halter on though, because they believe that if there were a fire or something, they could easily catch them. That's probably not right though, because if there were a fire in the pasture, I'm sure the horse would be smart enough to get out of there without being caught. Also, if the pasture is big, the horse could easily run. Just use a rope to catch your horse and then put the halter on.

Personally, I like to leave my horse's halter off to avoid it getting caught on things and also to avoid halter rubs. However, sometimes it is not practical to do that, as is my case. I board at a barn where they require the halters be left on so that the horses are easy for them to catch when they bring them in. Since he has to wear one, I make sure he has a breakaway halter. His has a leather crown strap which will snap if he gets caught on something and pulls hard. They also have velcro types available.
