He was given command of the Italian XX Corps under the command of General Gariboldi's Italian 5th Army. The Italian Command gradually gave General Rommel the command of the 5th Army. It wasn't until 2 December, 1941, that Hitler promoted Rommel to Field Marshal, thus making him the technically the ranking commander over the Italians.

Just a point of history. The Allies invaded the Italian island of Sicily, first, before they moved onto the Italian main land. This was in August 1943. The invasion of Sicily was on 10 July 1943. By August 17, 1943, the island had been taken by Gen Patton's 7th Army and Gen Montgomery's 8th Army. Sicily and Corsica are part of the country of Italy. The British invaded the "toe" of Italy on 3 September 1943 and the US 5th Army landed at Salerno on 9 September. None. The 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division served in North Africa and all during the Italian Campaign. They were first attached to the II Corps and later to the IV and maybe VI Corps. The V Corps took part in the D-Day landings at Normandy. They were part of the 1st Army for awhile, then the 3rd Army and finally the 7th Army. However the 5th Army did serve in Italy and the 34th Infantry Division served under its command.
