There is no good way to test a CPU without putting it onto a compatible motherboard.
There are 2 ways of resetting your motherboard to factory settings. 1) In bios there is an option to Load Setup Defaults in the Exit menu. 2) There is a jumper on the motherboard that will also clear the bois. It will normally be 3 pin labled CLRCT or something similar. Please refer to the manual for more details. IF YOU ARE AT ALL UNSURE ABOUT THIS THEN REFER TO AN EXPERT.

No. The point of a refund is that the money is being exchanged for the clothes, just as in a purchase. It's just being done in reverse. To get money back without returning the clothes would be fraud or theft.

Not much. Motherboards are tightly integrated, and you can't really upgrade the built-in components; that's what expansion slots are for. If you possess sufficient soldering skills, you may be able to replace bad components like capacitors.
