Some of Jesus' last words Matthew: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (xxvii, 46). Mark: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani, which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (xv, 34.) Luke: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit" (xxiii, 46). John: "It is finished" (xix, 30). === === In Jesus last moments, four different perspectives are brought to bear on the pivotal event of all history. The writers focused on what they either saw themselves, or was passed down to them (in the case of Mark and Luke). The other two crucified with Jesus may well have lingered on, which is why their legs were broken. Jesus was already dead, from the combined effects of hypovolemic shock (due to loss of blood), the excruciating agony of simply breathing with spikes through the median nerve in the wrist, respiratory acidosis, asphyxiation, and finally, cardiac arrest. While the above terms are medical in nature, and in a sense clinical, I defy any human being with a shred of humanity to read the real details of what this meant and not be moved.

It is also interesting to note that the word excruciating was created specifically to describe the agony of crucifixion, as no word existed which adequately described its pain.

Without doubt Jesus said everything which was attributed to Him. Each one of the evangelists is recording a particular perspective of the final moments at death. One thing is also clear. If you actually read the accounts, the moments of death was clearly a surrender and a declaration that at last, as death drew near, Jesus knew that in human terms, the agony was about to be over, but especially the work He came to do was indeed 'finished.' Truer words were never spoken.
