Yes, some of John McCain's relatives are from Mississippi. His paternal grandfather and paternal grandmother were from Mississippi. His maternal grandfather was also born in Mississippi. John McCain's great-great Grandfather was William Alexander McCain who owned a plantation called Teoc in Carroll County, MS. (Presently there is a community there by this name, Teoc.) The 1860 Slave Inhabitants "census" lists him with 52 slaves. Willliam Axlendar McCain joined Company I, 5th Mississippi Cavalry(CSA) in August 1863 when the unit was organized. His NARA military records is recorded under the name McCane and approximate age of 45. Records indicate that he was absent on 10 Feb 1864. During this time the 5th Mississippi Cavalry under General Chalmers was transferred to General Nathan B. Forrest's command. Wm McCain's records indicate he had deserted on that date and appeared on a list of Prisoners in Memphis on April 6, 1864. He signed an Oath of Amnesty and died in a hospital on 26 April 1864. William McCain's widow appears on the 1870 Carroll County census with a son named John S. This was the first John Sidney and the Senator is the John Sidney McCain III. Camp McCain military facility located near Grenada, MS is named after one of his family members---not sure if it was one who was a state senator. Univ. of Mississippi (i.e. Ole Miss), where the 1st debate is supposed to take place, has a McCain Hall and a McCain Plaza named for the family. So McCain will have the "home field" advantage for the debates. This link provides the a general ancestory of John McCain: http://www.wargs.com/political/mccain.html
