The All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF, ZNKR or Zen Nihon Kendou Renmei) defines the purpose of Kendo as:

To mould the mind and body.To cultivate a vigorous spirit,And through correct and rigid training,To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo. To hold in esteem human courtesy and honor. To associate with others with sincerity. And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself. Thus will one be able:To love one's country and society; To contribute to the development of culture; And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples.

Winning by getting the opponent to submit through the application of a painful joint lock or choke, while avoiding being locked or choked yourself. The martial art pretty much wrote the rule book of MMA, however, BJJ is considered "old school" and "outdated" now because, well, strikers have proven their mettle. The 1990's had this attitude of the "invincible superiority of grappling over striking" and while it is agreed that if a striker makes a mistake, the grappler can force the striker to play his game, some strikers know their game so well, that it is very dangerous to get close if you do not know a striking game yourself. Indeed, Kasushi Sakuraba, "the Gracie Hunter" as they nicnamed him, he beat all the Gracies by combining strikes, mostly kicks to the legs, with grappling, he did not beat them by outgrappling them. Sakuraba knew he did not stand a chance if he kept it a strictly grappling game, so he used a lot of strikes.

Additionally, K-1 converts to MMA, most notoriously a prime Mirko Phillipovic, and a prime Wanderlei Silva, were widely feared. In their prime, those two were damn well nearly untouchable, and they won mostly using punches or kicks to the head, on many ocassions against high level grapplers too. The toughest MMA arena, is easily Pride FC; because Martial Arts stuff has a wider audience in Japan, it enjoys greater funding, and greater funding means a higher winner's purse for the champion, and that means, the level of competition is much more brutal. Part of the reason the Gracies abandoned the Octagon, was because it was becoming "too easy" for them. To really test BJJ they needed a tougher arena. Sadly though, the Gracies bit off more than they could chew, now, few MMA fighters will get in any cage with ONLY BJJ. In the 1990's, it was thought grappling was all that was needed, it was thought to be "totally dominant" but, well, we all saw what Sakuraba did to Gracie (the "main" Gracie, Royce).

To make a long answer shorter, BJJ's objective is simple; you choke, or you bend either of his arms or legs in a manner that is uncomfortable, and could result in severe injury if he doesn't submit. Of course you have to know how to maneuver around a dude to be able to pull that off, obviously he's not just going to sit there and just let you do that. That is the main criticism of martial arts; the fact that be it fighting or contest, no one simply just stands there, and allows themselves to get hit with a left hook for example, no one will simply just lay flat on their back and let themselves get arm barred. The main reason BJJ gets praise, has to do with how highly combative it is; following Judo tradition, which forms a part of its origins, like in Judo you do not advance in belt rank unless you beat a higher belt.

Judo was created, along with many other martial arts, by the japanese. They invented martial arts for the sole reason that they were smaller than all the foreign visitors. So they couldn't fight back very well. They invented martial arts to give them a fighting chance if they manage to get into a fight with a larger foreign person.
