Berlin, Germany was once split in half by the Berlin Wall. West of the wall was West Germany, who was democratic. East of the wall was East Germany, who was communist.
East Germany (German Democratic Republic) was a communist client state of the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1990. It was created from the Soviet occupation zone of Germany (1945-1949) following World War II.

Note 'East Germany' and West Germany' were names used by the English-language media. The proper names of the two countries was 'Deutsche Demokratische Republik' (DDR = German Democratic Republic) and 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland' (=BRD, Federal Republic of Germany). East Berlin was part of the DDR. West Berlin was not part of the BRD, it was a separate entity.

After WW2 Germany was divided into the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland, west) and the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, east).
