First, they hoped that Britain and France would grant them recognition and send military aid. When Lincoln forestalled this by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, (making the war look like a crusade against slavery), they hoped that the North would simply become war-weary and vote Lincoln out in the '64 election.

Judging by his actions and those of his forces in Germany and Hungary, I would say that is a big YES. It was only forestalled by the power of NATO's armour and possession of nuclear weapons.
