I had shortblock replaced in my 2007 Impreza WRX STi and was charged $5.000 out the door including the cost of new shortblock. The whole engine consists of: -shortblock -heads (pair) -accessories (oil pump, gaskets, etc) They reused my heads since I had cracked piston (infamous 2007 STi issue) so the price included factory preassembled shortblock (~$1900) + gaskets +labor. Depending on the reason you want to replace your engine you might reuse some components.
No you can access the rear main seal by removing the Transmission, flywheel etc

To pull the engine from a 1998 Subaru Impreza, start by disconnecting the battery and removing any components obstructing the engine, such as the air intake, exhaust, and radiator. Support the engine with an engine hoist, then disconnect the engine mounts and various electrical connectors. After ensuring all connections are freed, carefully lift the engine out of the engine bay. Always refer to a repair manual for specific details and safety precautions.
