There is no one area of the brain involved in processing language, and knowledge of all areas of the brain involved in processing language and communication are still growing and developing. Below is a partial compilation of the currently known (accepted) areas of the brain involved in the processing of communication and language.

Keep in mind that language is one of the biggest endeavors of all humans. It is a whole body experience. It involves all avenues of communication, all six senses: sound and sight obviously are primary among these, but feeling (emotive) and touch (tactile), and even smell and touch can become involved. As far as the parts of the brain that are involved in processing language, so far as we know to date, these are listed below:

  • Cerebral Cortex
    • frontal lobe
      • The Brodmann area (BA) 45/47 of the inferior frontal gyrus, involved in syntactic processing and the working memory.
      • The Brodmann area (BA) 44 of the inferior frontal gyrus processes syntactic information and is also a working memory area.
      • Brocas area of the inferior frontal gyrus is directly involved in speech, speech processing, and speech development. Injury to this area can result in expressive aphasia (the loss or scrambling of speech and/or written language).
      • Wernicke's area: traditionally believed to be involved in speech development and processing, the role this area plays is now believed to be less, but still critical to the processing of language.
    • temporal lobe
      • Superior temporal gyrus
        • morphosyntactic processing, anterior portion of the structure is involved in processing syntax and semantic information.
      • Middle temporal gyrus (MTG), involved in lexical semantic (processing of word use and meaning) processing.
      • Basal temporal cortex, helps in lexical (word) processing.
  • occipital lobe - visual processing
    • Primary visual cortex - processes visual information.
  • Dorsal Stream - the "where" and "how" stream. The dorsal stream connects the occipital and parietal lobes and aids in processing spacial, navigational, and chronological information.
    • parietal lobes - visual processing, and number recognition and processing.
      • lateral intraparietal contains a map of spatiatial locations.
      • ventral intraparietal - contains elements of the visual, somatosensory (processing systems for touch, temperature, proprioception (body position)), andnociception (pain awareness), auditory, and vestibular (structures of the ear) systems.
  • Amygdala
    • Putamen - comprises part of the basal ganglia and helps regulate movements and influences learning
    • Caudate Nucleus - reactive part of the brain to physical beauty, regulates voluntary movement and high order motor control, govern comprehension (understanding, semantic use) and articulation (high order motor function) of words, especially during changes between languages. Regulates the threshold potential (the rate of exicatory synapse and positive feedback) of the cerebral cortex.

Again, this is not a comprehensive list. Other areas of the brain are involved in the development, processing, and modulation of speech, language, and communication.

Wernicke's area, located on the left side of the brain for most right-handed people, towards the rear, is most closely associated with language learning. Broca's area, on the same side but closer to the front, is most closely associated with language production, that is, speaking and writing.
