There are various theories to it but one that sounds most plausible is that because of its elongated size, it didn't give enough returns per sqft to the retailers. As in marketing where we measure returns on every investment (via different means and tools), in retail space the returns are measured per sqft area that the product consumes. That is the reason why hot-selling/high profit goods are kept at positions where the chances of their getting notices are maximum.
