Pontiac's uprising in 1763 was driven by Native American dissatisfaction with British policies and encroachments following the French and Indian War. After the British gained control of former French territories, they imposed restrictions on trade and land use, which angered various tribes. Pontiac, a leader of the Ottawa tribe, sought to unite several tribes to resist British expansion and protect their lands and way of life. The uprising aimed to expel British settlers and restore Native autonomy in the Great Lakes region.

The Proclamation of 1763 was the decree that stated colonial settlers had to remain east of the Appalachian Mountains. Issued by King George III following the French and Indian War, it aimed to stabilize relations with Native Americans by preventing encroachment on their lands.
