Liberation is of two types: the first liberation is liberation when we are alive, when we are liberated from the physical suffering of the body, misery of the mind and agony of the ego. The second liberation is liberation from rebirth. At death, when we realize we are not the body-mind, we are the Divine Soul, then there is no Karma, there is no rebirth. We are liberated and we become one with the Divine. Therefore, it is possible to be liberated while alive but ultimate liberation and unification with the Divine happens at the death of the physical body.
