Past present and future
There are two different verbs: # Transitive (object): to lay - lays - laid - laid - to place something (in a lying position) # Intransitive (no object): to lie - lies - lay - lain
The dog laid on the floor.
The past tense of lay is "laid"
I/you/we/they have laid. She/he/it has laid.
I lie the book on the table. NOW I laid the book down when I finished with it. PAST Lie down now! When did you lie down yesterday? (The rule: Chickens lay eggs. Everything else lies. Laid is correct only when applied to past tense)
