In Brazil, plain rice is cooked with garlic and salt.
Heat a small amount of vegetable or olive oil, add 1/2 a spoon of a garlic and salt paste (use a mortar and pestel to prepare the paste), fry until the garlic is cooked but not brown. Add the rice, fry that stirring constantly for a few minutes. Add boiling water, enough to cover the rice. Reduce heat, cover and let cook for 20 minutes or so, until rice is tender and all the water is gone. Adjust the quantities of garlic/salt, water to your taste. It's much better than plain rice cooked without any seasoning.
