SOME guns had serial numbers in the late 1800s. They were required by law on handguns and machine guns in 1934 (in the US) and on rifles and shotguns in 1968.
Checkering refers to the diamond patterned designs etched in the stock of some shotguns and rifles.
'GunsAmerica' have a number of categories of guns available for sale. One can purchase rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns and tactical guns. One can also buy ammo from them.
Title I (I.e., ordinary) long guns (rifles and shotguns). Some states may allow you to buy a handgun, only from a private seller.
Most guns were muzzle-loading guns that fired black powder. Some guns did have metal cartridges that were loaded in the breech. Some of the latter types of rifles were repeaters and could fire several rounds without re-loading.
There are uhndreds of different types of guns, and only a few are used in the military. The military does not use double barreled shotguns, nor double barreled rifles. They do not use lever action rifles, and muskets have not been used in a long time.
Mainly flintlock muskets. There were a few muzzleloading rifles, but many were smoothbore muskets, some shotguns.
This cannot really be answered. There are thousands of gun types and models for different cartridges. Basic groups would include handguns, and long guns. Long guns would include rifles, shotguns, and combination rifle/shotguns. But then things multiply quickly. Handguns- revolver, automatic, automatic revolver, single shot, machine pistol, shotgun pistol, blank pistol, tear gas pistol, flare pistol- double barreled pistols- and the list goes on. I left out pistols made to shoot underwater (Yes, really- there are some) Rifles- singleshot, 2 barrels, 3 barrels (or more) semi auto, bolt action, break action, lever action, pump action, machine gun, guns to throw ropes between ships, guns to shoot tranquilizer darts, - and the list goes on and on and. This does not even scratch the surface on all the types of guns that have been made- and are being designed today. Visit with your local librarian, and do some reading. Have fun!
they make guns? <><><> Gunsmiths did indeed make guns. Today some gunsmiths do still make guns, but most repair and adjust guns. They may repair or replace parts, chamber a firearm for a different caliber, mount scopes, clean guns, and bed rifles to a stock.
The US uses various guns in the Olympics, depending on the shooting event. Some commonly used guns include pistols such as the Smith & Wesson M&P, SIG Sauer P320, and the Walther P99, as well as rifles like the AR-15 platform rifles and the Anschutz rifles.
The old joke- you have to cut it in half, and count the rings. :) However, the real answer- there is no one way. Some guns can be dated from a serial number (Winchester rifles- Polishing Room records), but many guns never HAD serial numbers. Some can be dated by a production code (Remington rifles and shotguns) some guns by a serial number prefix (Marlin lever actions) Some can only be dated to a span of years the gun was made (Mossberg 152 rifles). I use about a dozen reference books, and another dozen public information lists- and can still only date a percentage of firearms.
