You should have a map/sat nav, water and a torch. These are the back things that i would recommend but obviously if you really are hiking a mountain you should make sure you have suitable clothes for the climate including a hat, waterproof clothing, sunscreen etc. If you are thinking of doing some serious hiking in a hot climate, you could invest in a hydration backpack, which will make sure you are provided with clean water through out your hike.

How do you pack your backpack?

The general rule of packing your backpack is that the heavier items will go at the top, this may seem strange as the lower back is stronger but it than means that the weight is distributed more evenly and you have better balance. The things you need the most/frequently should be in side pouches, in the pocket of the pack hood or in the very bottom compartment with easy access if the others are not an option. The lightest things, as long as they are not one of the most needed things can go at the bottom or sides of the main compartment, This rule may not apply to all rucksacks though, it should work for any rucksack between 60 - 100+ litres. Happy hiking.
