This was spurred by belief in "the domino effect"; which stated that if one country fell to communism the Soviet union would quickly take over neighboring countries too. The United states failed to stop communism in Vietnam due to insufficient troops, challenging and unfamiliar terrain, and lack of support from the Vietnamese.
