An instrument (such as a trumpet) supplied to you (by the school) for you to learn on. When you leave the school the instrument will be given to some new school pupil. If you are good at music, someone may purchase you your own instrument. This would be a "privately owned instrument" and will be yours after you leave school.

Easiest project would be to create a stringed instrument of some sort.
Additional info: We're high in high school and looking to play more modern music. We have 2 Trumpets, a horn, a euphonium, and a tuba. I can arrange the music, I'm just looking for song suggestions, preferably rock/alternative music from year 2000 onward. Thanks!
