I pretty sure the beast is the captain because he was ill at first with simon watching him 24/7, but later when all the boys set off to find the captain they found the captain all they found was his pants, belt and shoes which was weird but later all the small ones told everyone that they saw a beast and then i thought that the captain was missing and the small ones seeing a beast is stupid, so its definately the captain as the beast.
The captain in "Lord of the Flies" symbolizes the adult world from which the boys are disconnected on the island. He represents order, civilization, and rescue in contrast to the chaos and savagery that the boys descend into as they struggle to survive without adult supervision.
Ralph represents order and duty. Ralph continued to build shelters even though almost all of the other boys had gone off to bathe, eat or play. Ralph reminded the other boys of the need for such simple rules as keeping the fire lit and using the designated area as a toilet. It was Ralph who walked alone across the causeway to castle rock, when they all felt certain that it must be the lair of the beast. He did it because he saw it as his duty, as chief. Ralph understood the lure of hunting and 'playing at being savages' but his sense of responsibility combined with what he saw as his duty as chief kept him focused on trying to instill a sense of order and purpose in the other boys.
