I believe that means that when you have love for somebody, it's because they make you happy. You have something to look forward to. Well that would be in terms of relationships. But you could look at it from a general perspective too, being that showing love is light and it makes things better but hate just brings chaos and destruction. Hatred being hopeless in terms of relationships could mean that when you hate someone it's because you can't let go of whatever you have against them and you're only hurting yourself.
