Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes. These enzymes break down large food particles, worn out organelles, or intruders in a cell (e.g. bacteria, viruses). Hydrolytic enzymes work best in the acidic environment that the lysosome provides.

because the lysosomes is found in the cell itself (its a sac bounded by a single membrane). it contains what is called transport enzymes, these break down food and foreign substances. so the enzymes function within the lysosomes within the actual cell.
