you take the magazine (clip) you push it into the gun (located at the bottem) then make sure the clip is in by taping it firmly on the bottem to make sure it is all the way in the gun, you the take hold of the cocking mechanism (located at the back of the carrying handle), you then pull the cocking mechanism back all the way out and let it go, finally take the safety off, (left side of the gun just above the trigger) then you point the gun and squezze the trigger
To engage a target:
1. Insert a full magazine into the magazine well.
2. Pull the charging handle to the rear, then release it to load a round into the chamber.
3. Set the selector lever to either the SEMI or BURST position, depending on whether you want to fire one round or three.
4. Put the weapon to your shoulder.
5. Observe the tactical situation until you find a target to engage.
6. Aim the weapon at the target.
7. Squeeze the trigger.
8. If you missed the target, reaim the weapon and attempt to reengage it.
To lay down suppressive fire supporting a fire-and-maneuver operation, where you fire while your buddy moves to his next position:
1. Follow steps 1 through 4 in the directions on engaging targets. Have a full magazine ready to load into your rifle.
2. Determine the path your battle buddy will follow to reach his next position, so you don't fire over there and shoot him.
3. As your buddy moves, fire wildly toward the enemy, but away from your buddy. You're trying to keep the enemy's heads down so they won't shoot at your buddy while he moves.
4. If you run out of ammo while he's moving, press the magazine release, allow the magazine to fall out of your weapon, insert the new magazine quickly, press the bolt release and start shooting again.
To lay down suppressive fire supporting a fire-and-movement operation, where you fire while YOU are moving to your next position:
1. Load a full magazine into your rifle. Put it on the burst position.
2. Scream "MOVING!" at your buddy.
3. Look quickly to determine your next position. Try to keep it no more than three seconds from where you are now.
4. Look to see where your other squad members are, so you don't shoot them.
5. Get up and run kinda squatted over (if you stand straight up while you move someone WILL shoot you), and shoot at the enemy while you're running.
6. Get behind cover as fast as you can.
The M16 is a gas-operated automatic rifle. The barrel has a small hole which routes some of the gas produced by the burning powder through the gas tube back to the action. The stream of gas hits the gas key (a small protrusion on the bolt) and pushes the bolt back to open the action and extract the cartridge case. The bolt on the way back cocks the hammer and compresses the recoil buffer spring. The spring returns the bolt forward picking up a fresh round from the magazine and chambering it. The rifle is then ready to fire again.
A M16 cost about $2000.00
