An information systems manager is responsible for a variety of tasks that now most often are computer focused. They may perform or lead research within firms, develop new technology to help advance a company or to monitor effectiveness within the company or system. Information systems managers oversee teams of other technicians or specialists and are often responsible for reporting on the status of the systems. Other tasks may include ensuring the security of data and maintaining the system for optimal availability. Some positions within the field may be focused on internet security and data and information system managers would be responsible for the security of the entire system as well as keeping it secure online and any databases kept on or offline.

These positions can be found in many different fields including hospitals, businesses, government facilities and within the military. The job is primarily a sedentary position and can include long hours up to and in some cases over 50 hours per week as needed to maintain a secure and functional system. Managing other members of the team may involve communicating by email, message clients or by utilizing meetings.

Income for information systems managers begins around $88,000 per year for those new to the position while the average annual salary for mid-range experience and education is closer to $112,000 with more experienced information systems managers may top $141,000 annually. This pay rate is determined by the company, tasks performed and relevant education or experience.

Education to become an information systems manager can vary depending on the position. Most often a bachelor’s degree as well as some work experience is required. This degree can be completed with a four year college education focused on skills related to the field preferred. Many employers may prefer a graduate level degree such as an MBA (Master of Business Administration) in addition to experience with management and information systems. Additional certifications for software or other systems may also be recommended for advancement. Courses on finances, business management and database management are helpful to take and stay current on within the field.
