I'm assuming you have a Marlin model 1889, not 1887, as they never made a model 1887. The 1889 does have a patent date of 1887 on the barrel, so this is a common mistake. Any Marlin marked ".32W" on the barrel will normally be chambered for the .32-20 Win. cartridge.
Recheck your date -- there were no silver certificates dated 1887.

Give up on the where it was purchased, I do not think you will ever find that out. Where? Where was Marlin making mod. 1887 at that time? Do alittle looking around, you should be able to find out. When; about 1900, but you might alreaded know that. Hope this helps.

It depends on which coin it is. Just in the US, there were pennies, silver dollars, and even gold coins made in 1887.
