In the story Mary Poppins the father sees nothing but work, the mother is overcome by her interests and the children are left out to be taken care of by one after another stuffy, strict nanny. They act out with bad behavior that is fixed by the parents by hiring another nanny to fix the problem. That's where Mary Poppins comes in. She fixes the problem.
In the books, there are five Banks children: Jane, Michael, John, Barbara and Annabel. Jane and Michael are the eldest and they go on most of the magical adventures with Mary Poppins. In the movie, only Jane and Michael are featured.
In Mary Poppins (1964) there was Ellen who was the maid and Mrs. Brill who was the cook. In the movie there were only these two who helped run the Banks household.
While the Banks family in the original novel had several children, only two (Jane and Michael) appear in the movie. They were played by Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber.

Mary Poppins and Jiminy Cricket
"A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down."
It's from the film "Mary Poppins". Its about a Nanny who comes to look after two children, and she is no ordinary Nanny. She says supercalifragalisticexspealidous all the time It's actually spelt Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The song was written by the Sherman brothers. Super- means above, cali- means beauty, fragilistic means delicate (like fragile) expali- to atone, docious means educable so it means something like 'atoning for educability through delicate beauty' if it is to taken literally.
The running time for the stage play of Mary Poppins is about 2 hours 50 minutes including the one intermission. In New York, children under the age of 4 years were not permitted in the theater.
The brothers Richard M (b. 1928) and Robert B (1925-2012) Sherman wrote 17 original songs for the movie Mary Poppins (1964) many of which are being used in the stage production. It is difficult to say who wrote the majority of the words, as they both contributed to lyrics and melody. In 1965 they won two Academy Awards for Mary Poppins.
