Many women are motivated to diet based on the images they see of celebrities on TV, in magazines etc. This however does not mean that mass media influenced dieting is unhealthy. Many women in the public eye have a size 2 US figure (size 6 UK) which is a 24 inch waist line. In 1951 the average waist line was 25 inches, we all ate much healthier back then. Now the average waist line is 31 inches and we have an obesity problem. Having a smaller waist line is not a dangerous thing to strive for, so in many ways the mass media influence is good.
