Matter is the general term for which all physical objects consist. Matter includes atoms and particles which have mass. Another way is to define matter as anything that has mass and occupies volume.

The three main elements of matter is solids, liquids and gases.

Therefore gas is an object of matter, since it has mass and occupies volume. Common misconception of gas is that it isn't a element of matter, although this is incorrect. Gas just contains atoms which are further divided than that of a solid or liquid form. An example of a gaseous formation is the sun.

Hope this answers your question.
