Check the aluminum casting plate that holds the shift and throttle cables as they come into the top housing. Mine was cracked from fatigue and it wouldn't go into reverse. I cleaned the plate with a spray degreaser top and bottom - carb cleaner is good slid in a thin SS plate so the movements wouldn't catch - drilled some holes in both the alum cast plate and the SS and and JB Weld to "rivet" them together via the holes. Jigged it in place till the JB set up fully in about a day - actually shifts better now, and that was two years ago.
