Hazard Action .

1a. Poor electrical connections Checked by service engineer and electricians on a bi-annual basis

2a. Poor optics Checked by a service engineer bi-annually

3a. Incorrect posture Microscope user should check that the height of the chair to bench/desk, and eye to eyepiece height is correct for them. Long observations should be interrupted at regular intervals for movement and exercise of static muscles. See 'Microscopy and analysis', May 1993, pp. 15-17 (copy in optics laboratory)

4a. Broken glass Care placing slide on stage holder should reduce risk of clipping the edges of the slide. Good microscope practice should eliminate breaking coverslips with objectives.

5a. Excessive light intensity Care, commonsense and good microscope practice should prevent the potential for observing too bright light

A microscope needs to be dry and kept away from dust. The microscope needs to be used with two hands. The lenses should never be touched with fingers. Slides are typically made of glass, if they break they could be sharp.

Always hold a mciroscope with two hands: one on the base and one on the arm. Never use the course focus at 40x or higher. Always use oil with the 100x or higher objectives. Never switch directly from the oil immersion objectives to lower objectives without first cleaning the oil off the slide. Always return to the lowest objective before removing the slide, except when oil needs to be cleaned off the slide. In that case, position the objectives between the oil and non oil objectives, lower the stage, and carefully remove the slide.
