The major theme of the piece is of the terror and panic which humans feel in the face of the unknown forces of nature that are arrayed around us.
AT that time this piece was one of the most shocking around. Most concert goers were shocked, which of course made him become known by everyone.
He challenged many ideas in music.. but the biggest was his reaction against Romanticism. His powerful pieces made him one of the forefathers of the next big Musical movement: Neoclassicism.
