Dead battery or a broken battery wire
are you sure it's check gauges light or could it be check engine soon? Reason I'm asking is because I just recently purchased 2001 firebird, and check gauges light came, it just needed gas. Then it came on again to change oil. So I changed oil and it went off.
The check gauges light means that one of the gauges is out of the safe range.
The check gauges light stays on when one of the gauges is out of the safe or normal range.
When the check gauges light comes on it is telling you to check the gauges because at least one of the gauges is out of normal range. It could be low oil pressure, engine over heating or low voltage.
My older Blazer has a 'check engine' light and also a 'check gauges' light. When the 'check gauges' light is on, check your other gauges like the temp and volt gauges. One of them may be showing something different than normal.

It could be the alternator over or under charging, oil pressure low, or the engine overheating. The check gauges light comes on when one of the gauges is out of its safe range. Check the gauges. One or more of the gauges must be out of normal range to trip the "check gauges" light.
There is no reset for a check gauges light. If the light is on, there is a problem either with the temperature oil pressure or voltage.
The check gauges light comes on when one of the gauges is out of normal range. The vehicle is either overheating, not charging or low on oil pressure.
The check gauges light comes one when one of the gauges is not in the safe range. It could be an engine overheat, low oil pressure, or the alternator over/under charging.
When one of your gauges shows something abnormal, your "check gauges" light will come one. Chances are you're low on motor oil. When you corner, the oil will slosh away from the pickup, causing your oil pressure gauge to read zero for a second. This in turn causes your check gauges light to come on, but by the time you look at your gauges, the oil has settled in the pan is your oil pressure is reading normal again. When you see the check gauges light and the gauges are reading fine, check your oil.
It is listed in the 1991 Pontiac Firebird Operations Manual
