Yes.
Utility grade shotgun mostl likely made near the turn of the century.
No. Perhaps if you contacted MGM they could assist you.
I also have one of these and I am interested in findind out anything concerning this make and model shotgun. sorry its no help someone ? anyone? Vorisek's List shows Cracker-Jack Southern Arms Co as a Crescent Firearms product and Southern Arms Co Cracker Jack as a Harrington and Richardson.
Excel shotguns were made by Crescent, Crescent-Davis, Iver Johnson, and J. Stevens. If it was made by one of the first two, the number probably isn't a true serial number and the exact age cannot be determined. There are a couple of experts who MIGHT be able to place one of the other two into a range of +/- 5 years.
The Crescent Gun Company made guns which were sold under assorted brand names back around the turn of the last century. "Essex", "Knickerbocker", "Lakeside", "American Gun Co."; an on-line search will turn up an amazing list of over a hundred names under which these low cost guns were marketed. In many cases local hardware stores contracted with Crescent to have a small run of guns stamped with their store name. Essentially, anyone who had the cash could have Crescent guns stamped with their own brand name. These were low budget guns of serviceable quality which have little to no collector value today.
yes! I have one
Yes.
If the number is engraved and not stamped then it was done by a previous owner and not Colt. It could mean anything.
