A few older TVs did have a Firewire port but a recent HD TV will probably have an HDMI port which you could connect to a MacBook Pro via its mini display port. You will probably need to chain a couple of cables together (See links below) but it will depend on the connections available on the TV.
If someone is looking to identify a firewire port, they must look and notice the difference between it and a usb port. Firewire and usb ports are generally meant for the same things: to hook up printers and to transfer information.

You connect an old laptop to broadband just like a new laptop, using the Ethernet port. If the computer doesn't have an Ethernet port, then you will have to purchase an adapter.
If the IBM laptop you use has a VGA port you just connect your monitor cable directly to the port. Then turn on the laptop and it should install the drivers needed to use the external monitor automatically. If you laptop does not have a VGA port then you will need a "Laptop replica port" to add the VGA port so you can connect the monitor.

If you have a firewire port on your laptop, you can get a firewire cable to plug your camera in, and then use Movie Maker to extract the video. Movie Maker supports DV cameras fairly well. Otherwise, you will need to get a USB Video Capture device of some kind.
