I'm assuming here that this question is being asked in order to improve one's FICO. Neither will directly work in that neither type of acct. is reported to CRAs. However, a checking acct. indirectly affects one's FICO because it is needed in order to show a payment history to a creditor such as credit card. Prepaid debit cards have no affect on credit reports.

Credit worthiness/income determines wether you qualify. Having an acct does not impact your credit 1 way or the other unless it is negative.
