My friend always starts her stories with me and friends are... Is it proper to use me instead of I here?

If you would use "I" when speaking solely about yourself, then you use I with other people also -- but it is customary to say ".... and I". This is done where "I" or ".... and I" is the subject of the sentence.
So that it is correct to say
- "My friends and I saw Tom as we walked down the street."
Here "My friends and I" is the subject phrase in the sentence.
If you would say "me" then you still use me - as when you are using "me" or "... and me" as the object of the sentence. Again, it is customary to say "... and me" and not "Me and ...."
SO that it would be correct to say
- "Tom spoke to my friends and I me as we walked down the street."
In this instance, "my friends and I" is the object phrase in the sentence. - I believe the object phrase is "me"
