In my opinion all the grands come together and have a civil meeting and discuss the house, and if you can bring up selling the house and splitting the money and with your part get you another house or apartment because it will more than likely put you in a uncomfortable situation to try and keep the house up, or you could see about getting a home loan but with the economy like it is that would not be a good idea.

If there is no will, the estate may need to go through the probate process to determine legal ownership of the property. You may need to contact a probate attorney for guidance on how to proceed with transferring ownership of the property. It's important to gather all relevant documents and communicate with the other grandchildren to find a fair solution for the property's maintenance and ownership.

Can an executor do maintenance work to a family home when the other children are not consulted and they are being held responsible for the cost of repairs?

The executor must be appointed by the court. Once appointed they have the authority and responsibility to do whatever is necessary to settle the estate. That is the purpose of having an executor. If repairs are necessary to maintain the property or to prepare it for sale the executor has the authority to arrange for the repairs.

Who is responsible for home repairs with a life estate?

The person with the life estate should pay for repairs. They are benefiting from the arrangement, and so should except the responsibility, or give up the life estate. However, the answer may depend on the relationship between the parties. In most cases an elderly parent transfers ownership to their children in order to bypass probate while retaining the right to life use of the property. Since the parent is trying to preserve the property for their children, the children should be willing to help with repairs since it is in their interest for the property to be well maintained and an elderly parent may not have the resources to pay for repairs. For a definitive answer you need to check your state laws that govern life estates.
