This is not a good sign. Taking a laxative is not usually recommended for Crohns patients.
It is quite likely your husband has a blockage or at the very least a narrowing of the bowel in the affected area. It is time to seek medical attention before this gets worse. Reducing the inflammation with medicine will help, not a stool softener.
