I suspect that something in her waking life recently reminded her of this former husband. It may be something she didn't consciously notice, but her subconscious mind picked up. I also suspect that someone else - or even several persons - whom your mother knows have recently died. Her subconscious mind may have put these circumstances together into a dream that reminds your mother that she, too, is mortal and will eventually pass away.
