My pet rat died overnight with what looks like a swollen tongue which is very red in colour Can anyone explain what might have happened as she was fine the day before?

My rat did the exact same thing, I opned its mouth because it looked like it had something in its mouth, It was a HUGE black toung eww.... Dont know what happend there
UPDATE:
This has also happened to us. We called a 24 hour vet service and asked for things we could do on our own since we couldn't afford a vet. We're in the process of trying this, but for anyone else who's having this horrible problem, try reducing the swelling.
To reduce swelling, alternate every 15 minutes between holding an ice cube to the tongue and coating it with granulated sugar. If the rat doesn't like one, you can try to alternate to the other. Do not do both at the same time. I'll let you know if it works for us.
