The god was believe to have left and would return one day in the year 1 atl. Cortes confused Montezume and made him believe he was the returning god, Quetzalcoatl
Montezuma thought that Cortes was Quetzalcoatl because Quetzalcoatl was white and so Cortes is white.
Without the legend of Quetzalcoatl, the history of the Aztec people might have taken a significantly different trajectory. Quetzalcoatl, as a symbol of culture, civilization, and the arts, played a crucial role in shaping Aztec identity and religious practices. His narrative influenced political and social structures, possibly leading to alternative forms of governance and societal values. Additionally, the absence of such a powerful myth could have impacted the Aztecs' interactions with neighboring cultures and their responses to Spanish colonization.
No. That was Pizarro who conquered the Incans. Cortes relied on the Quetzalcoatl myth to pass as a God, get close to the Aztec emperor and ultimately betray him and conquer Mexico.
When Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortés arrived, the Aztecs believed he was Quetzalcoatl, a god who would bring peace to Mexico (some hope!). "Quetzalcoatl" meant feathered snake.
