Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are the three main types of rocks. Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling of molten rock, sedimentary rocks from the accumulation of sediment, and metamorphic rocks from the transformation of existing rocks under heat and pressure.
Examples of sedimentary rock would be limestone and coal.

The two main types of sedimentary rocks are clastic (detrital) rocks, which are made of pre-existing rock fragments cemented together, and chemical rocks, which form from minerals that precipitate out of solution.
Sedimentary rocks are formed from chemical and physical weathering of rock, their subsequent erosion and transportation to a place of deposit, and their lithification through compaction and cementation.

Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and consolidation of sediments, while metamorphic rocks are formed from the alteration of existing rocks through heat and pressure. Both of these rock types are commonly involved in the rock cycle and can contribute to the formation of other rock types.
Sedimentary rocks can record information about the environment in which they formed, such as the presence of water, wind, or ice. They can also preserve evidence of the organisms that lived in that environment, including fossils.
