There are four ghosts in the story - Marley- and the three tenses of Christmasses Past, present, and yet to come... but curiously nobody ( in time synch) dies in the story. contrary to some ideas- Tiny Tim does not die in the tale.
"A Christmas Carol" follows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Through these visits, Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas and undergoes a transformation from a cold-hearted individual to a kinder and more generous person.
The dead man is Jacob Marley Ebeneezer's business partner.
The first paragraph in the book is....
Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.
i think this makes it alot clearer than it does in any of the films.
A greedy man named Ebaneezer Scrooge's partner Marley (Jacob Marley) dies, and he ends up being a crabby old hag. One night Marley's ghost visits Scrooge and sends him 3 ghosts every night. The ghosts are The ghost of Christmas past, present and future. he learns to be kind and have a gentle heart.
Scrooge vows to make life changes and to keep Christmas in his heart all year around
It was to be Scrooge if he didn't agree to change his ways. The only other reference to a dead person on was that of Jacob Marley
