Some people like the speed and convenience when they are on the run with a lot to get done. Other times it's because they are traveling somewhere and don't have a lot of time to stop and eat somewhere so they will go through a drive through restaurant.

Drive through service initially became popular in the restaurant industry in the 1940s in the U.S.
The first drive-thru restaurant with the use of speakers to order food, was invented by Esther Snyder and her husband Harry, in 1948. The name of the restaurant was In-N-Out. As to why this was done I would assume convience.
Because they are faster and cheaper. Other reason might be that they are too lazy to get out of their car or that they just like the food.
