because the person who gives Jonas the memories used to be the receiver of memory but since Jonas is the new receiver of memory, the old receiver of memory calls himself the giver because he GIVES the memories
Jonas was assigned the receiver of memory.
Initially, Jonas feels a sense of pride at being chosen as the Receiver of Memory. However, as he undergoes his training and learns about the pain and burden of holding all of society's memories, he begins to question the honor of the role.
The audience is shocked because the role of Receiver of Memory is highly esteemed and comes with great responsibility and pain, without knowing the full extent of what it entails. Additionally, Jonas is young and perceived as innocent, making it surprising that he would be chosen for such a taxing role.
An example of an inciting incident in "The Giver" is when Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory during the Ceremony of Twelve. This event sets the stage for the story by disrupting the normal order of the community and propelling Jonas into a new role that challenges his understanding of the world he lives in.
The old receiver felt relieved and freed of the burden of carrying that memory. He was happy that Jonas was now able to share the pain and knowledge of that memory with him.
