The name for Germany's air force during the World War II period was "Luftwaffe". The name is generally translated into English as "Air Force"; however, a more literal translation would be "Air Arm" or "Air Weapon".
The German air force was since its creation in 1935, during WWII and still is today called the Luftwaffe.
Luftwaffe literally translates from German to English as Air (Luft) Weapon (waffe).
It was disbanded in 1946 but when the FRG joined NATO in 1949 the air force was known as the Bundesluftwaffe (Federal Air Weapon). At the same time the GDR air force was called the Luftstreitkrafte der NVA (Air Fighting Force of the National Peoples Army).
Since Germany was reunified in 1990 the air force has been generally known again as the Luftwaffe.
