Miranda Washinawatok, a Menominee girl and seventh grader at Sacred Heart Catholic Academy in Shawano, Wisconsin, has become an extremely famous person in the past few months (February to May 2012). Her story has appeared in newspapers and media reports around the world and a huge petition has been signed by people inside the USA and in many other countries.

The Chippewa have given us many famous people. Jeanette Corbiere-Lavel is a famous human rights activist who fought for rights to be restored to women who married non-Indian men. Leonard Peltier ,a human rights activist, still in prison for a crime that evidence shows he did not commit. Dennis Banks is the co founder of the American Indian movement. Winona LaDuke is a famous writer and activist.
