WikiAnswers contributors weigh in on the things that a firefighter absolutely cannot fear:
The main thing would be, not being afraid of fire. However, if someone is afraid of fire, there are still many jobs on a fire scene not involving fighting fire.
These include:
You cannot be afraid of fire, blood, traffic accidents, death, people with mental disorders.
AnswerFear is a component of human psychology. Anyone working in dangerous situations that is not afraid might be suspect, might be dangerous or at least cut out as unsafe. Fear is something all emergency services personal experience. It willappear on the job at different times and in different situations. But it is what the individual does with that fear that is important. Acknowledging fear and coupling that to caution will allow a fire fighter to operate in a "balanced" mode. The imperatives faced by a fire fighter, particularly when lives are at stake, might push that individual into making poor decisions regarding rescue. The fire fighter who throws caution to the wind might end up in the same situation as the victim. Then the next crew in will have to rescue two people; the problem has more than doubled. Fear must be acknowledged, and then set aside so that the extreme challenges the fire fighter faces can be managed.
Fear, like the rest of the feelings a first responder experiences, will not be something he deceives himself about. Instead, he will detach from these things, which is something he learns by practicing. This permits the individual to bring his best to the situation. A fire fighter has feelings like anyone else, but the difference is that he will not allow those feelings to interfere with his judgment and with what he is doing.
Some firefighters will say they aren't afraid of anything, but there are a lot of fears that you feel as a firefighter about to go into a burning building:
- getting trapped in the building
- losing a brother firefighter
- losing a civilian
- the building colapsing
- a flashover
- explosion from a gas tank or something
All-in-all, I would say that the biggest fear that firefighters have is someone being killed in a fire. Firefighters risk their own lives to save others, so someone else's death in a fire would be a more significant fear for them than losing their own life.
Fire would be my first choice and heights would be a second. But I would have a healthy respect for both of them.
