Child and youth care focuses specifically on the well-being and development of children and young people, addressing their emotional, social, and behavioral needs. Social work is a broader field that encompasses working with individuals, families, groups, and communities to address various social issues and promote well-being. Child and youth care workers often provide more hands-on, direct care to young people, while social workers may engage in advocacy, policy development, and case management across diverse populations.

Usually when people talk about "professional social workers" they are talking about people who have earned their Master of Social Work, which is typically a 60 credit master's degree. Clinical Social workers (usually called LCSW's) have earned their MSW and approx. two years of clinical experience (including psychotherapy) and passed an exam in their state. Typically people who work in child welfare or adult protection agencies are not "professional social workers," although some states do call them "social workers." Typically, these caseworkers have a bachelor's level degree in some area usually related to social services (psychology, sociology, criminology, social work, etc.) although I have known some with unrelated degrees (marketing, etc.).
