A cross-over cable is used to connect two computers together without the use of a connecting device, such as a switch or hub.
When daisy-chaining hubs and switches, some older equipment has a special port called the up-link port. This port requires the use of a cross-over cable to add hubs to hubs, etc.
Networking components; specifically transmitting network devices use crossover cables to communicate with other transmitting devices. It is called a crossover cable due to having the transmit pins connected to the receive pins
connecting a switch to a switch
To connect two devices of the same type together. e.g. You would use a crossover cable to connect a router to another router, a switch to another switch or a computer to another computer. If you are connecting diferent devices together, such as a router to a switch, a straight through cable should be used.
Is a crossover cable needed to connect Host computers to the switch? Why or why not?
The difference between a cross cable and a state cable is that a cross cable, or crossover cable, is used specifically to connect two of the same devices.
what is different between cross cabling and straight cabling ANSWER: a crossover cable is used to connect like devices, like a router to a router, but a straight through cable is used to connect dissimilar devices, like a router to a computer.
Crossover
A crossover cable.
crossover cable is used to connect two switches.
Traditionally, two switches can be connected together with a crossover cable. A crossover cable should be used whenever two of the same network devices need to be connected together. e.g. Connecting a router to another router, a switch to another switch or a PC to another PC. Using a crossover cable is not always necessary however. Most new network devices include a feature named Auto-MDIX (Medium Dependant Interface Crossover). Auto-MDIX detects what type of cable is connected and automatically changes its own configuration to enable data transmission to the other device. i.e. It does not matter if you use a straight through cable or crossover cable on Auto-MDIX enabled devices. Both will work.

Crossover
crossover cable connects two devices of the same type
crossover cables must be used between 2 devices from the same level like (pc & pc - Pc & router - router & router) but strait through cable used between 2 different levels like (pc & switch - router & switch )
